FNB Stadium Banned: Chaos As 6,000 Fans Lock Out Spurs Emergency Decision To Relocate Durban
The possibility of hosting another Soweto Derby at Moses Mabhida Stadium has gained momentum following comments from Orlando Pirates legend Thapelo Liau, who believes Durban could once again provide a suitable venue for one of South African football’s biggest spectacles.
Liau, affectionately known as Abuti Bula Boot, has backed the possibility of taking the famous rivalry outside Johannesburg, although he maintains that FNB Stadium remains his preferred venue because of its larger capacity and historical significance.
The discussion follows the successful staging of the Nedbank Cup final between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Despite concerns about potential crowd trouble because of the intense rivalry between the two clubs, the occasion passed without the feared incidents of disorder.
For Liau, that experience demonstrated that Durban has the facilities and organisational capabilities to host another major encounter between the Soweto giants. He believes the safety of supporters must always come before tradition or the desire to play at a particular stadium.
However, the former Pirates midfielder also acknowledged that moving the derby away from FNB Stadium could disappoint some supporters, particularly those who regularly attend matches in Johannesburg.
He further pointed to the growing popularity of South African football, with young stars such as Relebohile Mofokeng attracting a new generation of supporters and increasing competition for match tickets.
His comments come after Premier Soccer League chairman Dr Irvin Khoza raised concerns about FNB Stadium’s ability to manage large crowds following recent incidents. Approximately 6,000 supporters were reportedly left outside the stadium despite having purchased tickets, while disturbing scenes emerged as some fans attempted to force their way through closed gates.
Khoza has since suggested that Moses Mabhida Stadium could become an alternative venue for major fixtures, praising its organisation during previous high-profile matches.
Although no official decision has been announced, Liau’s comments have strengthened the argument for considering Durban as a future Soweto Derby destination. Ultimately, whichever stadium hosts the next encounter, supporters’ safety and proper crowd management must remain the priority.
