President Mahama Has Sent A Sèrious Wàrning To Health Facilities

According to a report by UTV Ghana today being Friday, November 6, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has warned hospitals and other healthcare facilities across Ghana to stop demanding additional payments from patients for medical services covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The President has expressed concern over the practice of some health facilities charging insured patients extra fees despite the services they seek being covered under the national health insurance programme.

The NHIS was introduced to make healthcare more affordable and accessible to Ghanaians by reducing the amount individuals have to pay when seeking medical attention. However, reports of patients being asked to make extra payments have raised questions about whether some healthcare facilities are complying with the scheme’s guidelines.

For many families, the scheme serves as an important financial safety net, allowing them to access essential medical services without having to bear the full cost of treatment.

Mahama believes that demanding additional payments for services already covered by the NHIS defeats the objectives of the programme and creates unnecessary difficulties for people who rely on it.

His directive also highlights the need for stronger supervision of healthcare facilities to ensure that patients receive the benefits guaranteed under their insurance coverage.

The relevant authorities are expected to pay closer attention to complaints involving unauthorised charges and ensure that healthcare providers operate within the established rules of the scheme.

Mahama is urging hospitals and other healthcare providers to prioritise the welfare of patients and avoid practices that could discourage people from using the insurance scheme.

The President’s position is that Ghanaians who have enrolled in the NHIS should be allowed to enjoy the benefits of their membership without being subjected to additional charges for services that are already covered.
