Do you know that Peter Obi has not paid tax in Nigeria. He kept his money in a tax haven —Oshiomhole
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has accused Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), of failing to pay taxes in Nigeria, alleging that the former Anambra State governor kept significant financial assets in offshore tax havens.
According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, made the allegations during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
The former Edo State governor questioned Obi’s financial activities while criticising his economic policies and suitability to offer an alternative to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Oshiomhole alleged that Obi had deposited his money in jurisdictions where taxes were not paid, insisting that the NDC presidential candidate had failed to meet his tax obligations in Nigeria.
“Do you know that Peter Obi has not paid tax in Nigeria? He kept his money in a tax haven,” Oshiomhole said.
The senator further maintained that Obi had previously acknowledged the allegation, arguing that his claims were not based on speculation.
“And he has admitted to this, you know, he admitted it,” he added.
Oshiomhole also characterised Obi as a trader, arguing that his leadership approach placed greater emphasis on immediate economic benefits rather than long-term national development.
He insisted that the former Anambra governor had not provided a convincing alternative to Tinubu’s economic policies and challenged him to explain what he would do differently if elected president in 2027.
The APC senator also questioned Obi’s position on the student loan programme introduced by the Tinubu administration and his views on the removal of fuel subsidies.
He further accused the NDC presidential candidate of making inconsistent remarks about the subsidy policy, particularly in relation to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s position on bringing back fuel subsidies.
Oshiomhole maintained that Nigerians deserved presidential candidates who could clearly communicate their policy positions and honestly explain difficult economic decisions to the public.
The senator’s remarks come amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general election, with Obi emerging as the NDC’s presidential candidate after previously contesting the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.
