Mahama Announces Procurement of 100 New Ambulances as Government Moves

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is procuring 100 new ambulances to replenish the fleet of the National Ambulance Service as part of efforts to improve emergency medical response across the country.

The announcement comes amid concerns about the condition of some ambulances currently in operation and the need to ensure that emergency medical services are adequately equipped to respond to accidents, medical emergencies and other life-threatening situations.

According to President Mahama, the government is taking steps to increase the number of functional ambulances available to the National Ambulance Service through the procurement of new vehicles.

He explained that the planned acquisition of 100 new ambulances is intended to help restock the service’s fleet and improve its ability to transport patients who require urgent medical attention.

Beyond the procurement of new vehicles, the President also disclosed that approximately 100 ambulances that have broken down could be repaired and returned to service if the necessary spare parts are made available.

This means that the government is considering both the acquisition of new ambulances and the restoration of existing vehicles as part of efforts to address the challenges facing the emergency response system.

The possibility of repairing the broken-down ambulances could provide additional support to the National Ambulance Service, particularly as emergency medical transportation remains an important part of Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.

For many Ghanaians, access to a functional ambulance can make a significant difference during medical emergencies. Delays in transporting accident victims, pregnant women and critically ill patients to health facilities can have serious consequences.

The availability of more operational ambulances is therefore expected to improve emergency response capacity and reduce some of the difficulties associated with transporting patients across different parts of the country.

However, the success of the planned intervention will also depend on how quickly the new ambulances are delivered, the availability of spare parts and the government’s ability to maintain the vehicles after they are restored to service.

The announcement has consequently drawn attention to the importance of strengthening Ghana’s emergency medical transportation system and ensuring that ambulances remain operational when citizens need them.

With 100 new ambulances being procured and another 100 potentially available for restoration, attention will now turn to the implementation of the government’s plans and how the National Ambulance Service will benefit from the intervention.
