Kenyans React as Details Emerge on What Mackenzie’s 200-Year Sentence Means for Leaders
Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has reacted to the sentencing of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison, delivering a message that has sparked attention amid growing discussions about leadership and accountability in Kenya.
In a statement shared on Friday, November 6, 2026, Kuria welcomed the court’s decision, saying justice had finally been served following the Shakahola tragedy.
“Justice has been served. Mackenzie in for 200 years. We have dealt with religious cult leaders. Now onward to political cult leaders,” Kuria stated.
His remarks came shortly after the High Court in Mombasa sentenced Mackenzie over the deaths of 191 people, including 190 children and one adult, in the Shakahola massacre.
Justice Diana Kavedza handed the preacher a total of 200 years in prison after the court found him guilty of the murder charges.
The court established that 183 victims died through starvation while eight others were killed through direct homicide. Mackenzie had been accused of directing his followers to fast to death in the belief that they would meet Jesus.
Twenty-eight other people who were convicted alongside him also received different prison sentences for their roles in the killings.
The Shakahola tragedy came to national attention in 2023 after authorities began uncovering bodies in shallow graves in Kilifi County. More than 400 bodies were eventually recovered from the area, making it one of Kenya’s deadliest cult-related tragedies.
Kuria’s statement has now brought another dimension to the debate, with his reference to political cult leaders drawing attention beyond the courtroom proceedings.
However, he did not name any politician in the remarks provided.
His comments come as Kenya’s political environment continues to attract heated discussions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The court’s decision marks a major development in the Shakahola case, although Mackenzie’s defence team has indicated plans to appeal the sentence.
