If NPP wants accountability, they should bring back Ken Ofori-Atta – NDC

The NDC Vice Chair, Abanga, challenged the NPP to demand the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta if they genuinely want accountability.

According to Abanga, the NPP demands are misplaced, stressing that their attention should be directed towards Ofori-Atta rather than  Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

He argued that Ofori-Atta should be the focus of the NPP’s accountability demands, citing how the former minister imposed painful haircuts on citizens through Ghana’s debt restructuring programme.

Abanga also highlighted that Ken Ofori-Atta contributed to the country’s economic challenges, including its loss of investment-grade credit status.

In a statement, Abanga praised Ablakwa for his meticulous leadership and positive contributions to Ghana’s international relations.

He wrote, “The NPP’s “Y3gye y3 sika” demands are completely misplaced. Instead of targeting the venerable Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a meticulous leader whose disciplined work has brought immense positive impact to Ghana’s international relations, they should look closer to home”.

“The real focus should be on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who forced painful haircuts on citizens and landed Ghana in junk status,” he added.

“If the NPP wants accountability, they should demand that Ofori-Atta muster the courage to return to Ghana and account for his stewardship,” he said.

In related news, the Accra High Court has given the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) four more weeks to complete efforts to serve former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his former Chief of Cabinet, Ernest Darko Akore, with summons in the United States.

On September 29, the prosecution told the court that a team that travelled to the United States to engage the US Department of Justice over the service of the summons was yet to return to Ghana.

The prosecution therefore asked the High Court for additional time to enable it to complete the necessary processes, a request the court granted.

On August 27, 2026, during the previous hearing, the case was adjourned to September 29, 2026, to allow the prosecution time to serve Ofori-Atta and Akore with the necessary processes in the United States.

Meanwhile, the High Court has since adjourned the case involving Ofori-Atta and seven others to October 29, 2026.

It will be recalled that Ofori-Atta is facing 28 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences arising from investigations into revenue assurance contracts between Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Ken Ofori-Atta is standing trial alongside former GRA Commissioners-General Emmanuel Kofi Nti and Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah; former Customs Commissioner Isaac Crentsil; former Customs Commissioner Kwadwo Damoah; SML Chief Executive Officer Evans Adusei; and former Chief of Cabinet to Mr Ofori-Atta, Ernest Darko Akore.

Earlier, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) said former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is still a fugitive from justice in Ghana.
