Uche Odoputa Plans Emotional Funeral for Father With Empty Casket After Abd^ction
For Uche Odoputa and his family, saying goodbye to their father has been anything but easy. More than three years after his disappearance, the Nollywood actor and his loved ones are preparing to hold a funeral in his honour, despite having no body to lay to rest.
The painful situation dates back to May 2022, when Uche’s father, Mr Kenneth Odoputa, travelled to the South-East to visit a longtime friend. It was an ordinary trip that was supposed to be followed by a safe return home. Sadly, things took a terrible turn when armed men reportedly abducted him and his friend.
For the families, the days that followed were filled with uncertainty. They had no clear information about where the two men were being held or what had happened to them. As time passed, the situation became increasingly distressing, with everyone hoping that the men would eventually return home alive.
The k!dnappers later made contact and demanded money for their release. Like many families caught in such circumstances, they were left with a difficult decision. They paid the demanded ransom, believing that doing so would give their loved ones another chance to come home.
Rather than receiving the reunion they had prayed for, the family was informed that Kenneth had d!ed. The news turned what had already been a frightening experience into a loss that would affect them for years.
For his wife and children, the pain has also been made harder by the fact that they never got his remains back. There was no opportunity to see him one last time, arrange a burial immediately or have the kind of farewell families normally give their loved ones.
Uche began his video about the experience with a statement that captured the weight of what his family had gone through:
It is a painful reminder of how insecurity can change the lives of ordinary families, leaving behind questions, grief and memories that are difficult to put into words.
Now, the family has decided that Kenneth deserves to be honoured, regardless of the circumstances surrounding his death. They plan to organise a funeral in a few weeks, using an empty casket because his body has never been recovered.
For them, the ceremony is not simply about having a burial. It is about recognising a life that mattered, giving his memory a place in the family and allowing those who loved him to express their grief.
Explaining the reason behind the decision, Uche said:
“We have no body to lay to rest, but we have his life to remember, his dignity to honour, our love to express.”
Those words reflect the difficult reality the family has had to accept. Although they cannot give Kenneth a traditional burial, they can still gather, remember him and celebrate the years they shared with him.
Losing a parent is difficult under any circumstances. Having to organise a funeral without the person’s remains makes the experience even more heartbreaking.
As the Odoputa family prepares for this farewell, their hope is to give Kenneth the honour he deserves and find some measure of comfort after years of uncertainty and grief.
