Government Rejects Claims That Mkhwanazi’s Hawks Move Is Political Manoeuvre
The government has rejected speculation that the reported move of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to head the Hawks is an attempt to prevent him from becoming South Africa’s next National Police Commissioner.
Deputy Government Spokesperson William Baloyi dismissed the claims as speculation, saying there is no evidence to suggest that the proposed appointment is intended to sideline Mkhwanazi or block his career advancement.
Baloyi explained that the position of National Police Commissioner is not currently vacant. He also pointed out that Mkhwanazi is not among the serving National Deputy Commissioners, arguing that suggestions of an attempt to prevent his promotion are premature.
He further highlighted that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, is an independent specialised crime-fighting unit established under its own legislation.
According to Baloyi, being appointed to lead the Hawks should not automatically be viewed as a demotion or an attempt to weaken Mkhwanazi’s standing within the South African Police Service.
The government spokesperson urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid drawing conclusions based on unconfirmed reports surrounding the proposed appointment.
Mkhwanazi has attracted national attention following his allegations that criminal syndicates have infiltrated parts of South Africa’s criminal justice system. His claims contributed to the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
His reported appointment as the national head of the Hawks remains subject to the relevant government procedures and has not yet been finalised.
