From Parliament To Prison – Ghanaian MP Remains In Dutch Jail As US Pushes Romance Scam Case

Trouble deepens for Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, popularly known as OK Frimpong.

A Dutch court has rejected two bail applications filed for him, leaving him in custody in the Netherlands.

The MP was arrested on May 10, 2026, at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport after arriving from Ghana. He was picked up based on an extradition request from the United States.

According to Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who gave an update in Parliament, two separate attempts to free the MP have failed.

“The court first dismissed the substantive bail application of the embattled MP. An appeal filed was also rejected,” Dafeamekpor said.

This means OK Frimpong will remain in custody in Amsterdam until his extradition hearing.

The substantive hearing has been set for Tuesday, November 18, 2026, at 11:00 AM in Haarlem, Netherlands. That hearing will determine whether he will be extradited to the United States to face trial.

The US wants him over alleged romance scams and money laundering. Reports say he is facing an 18-count indictment in the US.

The allegations have not yet been proven in court. He is still presumed innocent until the court decides.

But for now, the MP who was supposed to be making laws in Ghana is sitting in a Dutch cell.

His seat in Parliament, Asante Akyem North, is now without a representative in the chamber.

Many Ghanaians are asking questions – how did an MP get involved in such a case? What will happen to his seat?

The Parliament of Ghana says it is monitoring the case.

The big date is November 18. On that day, the Dutch court will decide – will OK Frimpong be sent to America to face justice, or will he be freed?
