Former FIFA Referee Weighs In on Orlando Pirates’ Controversial Goals Against Kaizer Chiefs
9The latest Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs continues to generate debate after former FIFA referee Victor Hlungwani weighed in on several controversial refereeing decisions.
Orlando Pirates secured a memorable 2-1 victory over their bitter rivals at FNB Stadium on Saturday, November 1, 2026. However, the result has been overshadowed by questions surrounding the match officials’ decisions.
Hlungwani Questions Pirates’ Opening Goal
Speaking on SABC’s SoccerZone, Hlungwani analysed Yanela Mbuthuma’s opening goal and concluded that the Orlando Pirates striker was in an offside position when the ball was played.
According to the former referee, a closer examination of the players’ positions showed that Mbuthuma was ahead of the relevant defensive line.
Hlungwani maintained that the goal should not have been allowed to stand, arguing that the officials made an incorrect decision.
His assessment has added to the frustration among Kaizer Chiefs supporters, who believed the goal should have been disallowed.
