Jomo Sono: The man who beat poverty to become a true football legend

Ephraim Matsilele Sono, better known as Jomo Sono, is a former South African footballer who went on to become a coach, club owner and influential figure in the game. Often called the “Black Prince of South African Soccer,” he built a career that extended far beyond his playing days.

Sono was born in Orlando East, Soweto, on July 17, 1955. His father, Eric “Scara” Bamuza Sono, played for Orlando Pirates but died in a car accident when Jomo was eight. His mother later left the family, and he was raised by his grandparents, including a grandfather who had lost his sight.

The family had little money. As a boy, Sono sold apples and peanuts at bus stops to help pay for school costs, clothes and food. The work was difficult, and he was sometimes chased away by staff and customers. These hardships formed part of the difficult childhood he later overcame.

A chance to move towards football came when Orlando Pirates played an exhibition match at a nearby stadium. Sono, then 14, saw an opportunity to connect with the team. His father’s association with the club and his own ability helped open the way to a football career. He went on to become a prominent player, earning recognition in South Africa and abroad.

After his playing career, Sono remained closely involved in the sport. He became a coach and club owner, and is associated with Jomo Cosmos, the club he established. He has also been known for developing young players and helping some move on to opportunities with European teams.

Sono’s influence has reached beyond the pitch. He has built business interests and held leadership roles in football, including serving on the Premier Soccer League board. His long involvement in coaching has made him one of the most enduring figures in South African football.

His journey from a childhood marked by loss and poverty to a career at the centre of the sport is often described as a rise from hardship to success. Sono’s achievements as a player, coach and businessman have made him a lasting part of the country’s football history.
