Motorists Get Small Petrol Cut and Big Diesel Drop from Tomorrow
South African drivers will pay less for fuel from Wednesday as the latest monthly price adjustments bring some relief at the pumps. Both grades of petrol will drop by only 1 cent a litre, but diesel is expected to fall by between R1.09 and R1.13 a litre depending on the grade.
The changes take effect on 4 November 2026 after the Minister of Finance announced short-term relief measures during the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement. These steps cut the general fuel levy on petrol by 1.50 cents a litre and on diesel by 3 cents a litre. Officials said the cuts were needed to help households and businesses even though global oil prices rose during the review period and the rand weakened against the US dollar.
International petroleum product prices also stayed high, and the slate levy jumped by more than 48 cents a litre. Without the government intervention, prices would likely have increased. The levy reductions therefore limited the damage and produced small drops instead.
The bigger fall in diesel prices is good news for truckers, farmers, taxi operators and delivery companies that rely heavily on the fuel. Lower diesel costs can ease pressure on food prices and transport fares in the weeks ahead. Ordinary motorists who fill up with petrol will notice only a tiny saving on each litre, but every cent counts when the tank is full.
Not every fuel becomes cheaper. Illuminating paraffin will rise by R3.66 a litre, and LP gas will increase by R1.83 a kilogram in most areas and by R2.08 in the Western Cape. Households that use these products for cooking and heating may feel the extra cost.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy sets the prices each month after looking at the average price of Brent crude oil, the rand-dollar exchange rate and local levies. This month the combination of higher global costs and a softer currency pointed toward increases, yet the special levy cuts turned the outcome into modest relief for petrol and diesel users.
For many South Africans the news arrives at a useful time. Fuel remains one of the biggest monthly expenses for families and small businesses. A drop, even a small one, helps stretch the budget a little further. Motorists are advised to check prices at their usual stations from Wednesday morning as retailers begin to implement the new figures.
The adjustments mark a rare month of lower pump prices after a period of steady increases. While the petrol cut is almost too small to notice, the sharp diesel reduction offers real savings for those who use it most. Officials will review prices again next month once new global oil and currency data become available.
