Calls Grow for Minister Cachalia to Keep General Mkhwanazi on the Frontline
Questions have been raised about reported plans involving KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Some people are worried about his role in police operations and about the future leadership of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
In a strongly worded public message addressed to Acting Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia, a critic asked why there seemed to be efforts to move Mkhwanazi away from frontline policing and into an administrative job based in an office.
The message said Mkhwanazi has made his priorities clear. According to the writer, his focus is on confronting criminals through direct police operations, not on spending most of his time in boardroom meetings or managing dockets from behind a desk. It also asked why an experienced operational commander would be taken off the frontline at a time when crime remains a major concern across the country.
Another point in the message was about who will lead SAPS in future. The critic suggested that Mkhwanazi could one day be considered as a successor to National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola when Masemola retires. The message warned that disrupting this path could raise more questions about the direction of the police service and how much weight is given to operational experience when senior commanders are chosen. It added that South Africa needs police leaders who stay connected to the work on the ground, where officers deal with criminal networks and respond to serious crimes.
It should be noted that these concerns are the views of the person who wrote the message. They do not prove what the minister intends to do, and they do not confirm that any plan for succession has been decided.
Even so, the message has brought fresh attention to Mkhwanazi’s position within SAPS and to the minister’s authority over police leadership. It has also added to the wider debate about how to balance frontline policing with administrative duties.
