Gachagua Hits Back At Hotel Critics And Says No One Will Get The Presidency On A Silver Platter

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has fired back at critics within the opposition. He insists the presidency will not be handed to anyone on a silver platter and that leaders must prioritise hard work and numbers over pride or social media titles.

In remarks circulating widely on Tuesday Gachagua addressed those accusing him of maringo and kiburi which means pride and arrogance. He said some leaders were in hotels shouting at him while claiming he was proud.

He added that having bloggers who call you the sixth president cannot translate into votes. He said the seat cannot be given like a cigarette. “You must work hard no matter the policies you have,” he said.

He stressed that nobody would be gifted the top seat. “There is nobody who will be handed the presidency on a silver platter. You must work for it.”

The comments were widely read as a swipe at opposition figures including Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i and Justin Muturi.

Gachagua also turned on a critic from Mbeere. He questioned the person’s capacity to lecture him while failing at home. He said the critic mobilised only 35 people in a recent MCA by-election in his own polling station. He claimed President William Ruto whom he calls Kasongo beat him with 238.

He warned against empty bravado without electoral strength. He said Ruto is hunting for numbers while some opposition voices remain in hotels.

The remarks come amid growing friction over Gachagua’s emphasis on a core alliance of DCP and Wiper and the Linda Mwananchi movement. Matiang’i and Muturi have criticised that approach as majoritarian arrogance that could fracture the wider opposition.

Gachagua’s response reframes the debate around practical mobilisation rather than hotel strategy.
