Charity Ngilu Visits Gachagua at Wamunyoro as Opposition Leaders Pursue 2027 Unity
Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has paid a courtesy visit to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County, drawing attention to efforts to unite opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The two leaders met on Tuesday, November 3, as consultations continue on building a united front against President William Ruto’s administration.Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), said their discussions focused on the formation of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which brought together opposition leaders before the 2002 General Election.
He described Ngilu as the “Iron Lady” of Kenyan politics and praised her role in the coalition formed with the late former President Mwai Kibaki and the late Michael Kijana Wamalwa to challenge KANU’s rule.
In a statement after the meeting, Gachagua said Ngilu shared lessons on how NARC was negotiated, organised and turned into a successful political alliance.
“This morning, I benefited greatly from Hon. Ngilu’s wisdom as she took me through how NARC was crafted and implemented,” he said.
Gachagua added that the experience could help the current opposition organise itself and agree on a common strategy ahead of the next polls.
He has repeatedly called on opposition leaders to work together and settle on one presidential candidate to challenge the ruling coalition in 2027. He said the country was approaching what he termed a “2002 moment”, comparing the current political climate in Kenya with the cooperation that ended KANU’s long stay in power.
Ngilu also said Kenya had another opportunity for opposition leaders to put aside individual ambitions and work towards a common goal.
She argued that any future political arrangement should be inclusive and bring together leaders capable of serving the country.
The visit comes as Gachagua continues consultations with opposition figures, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
However, the opposition has yet to agree on its coalition structure, leadership arrangements or presidential candidate.
Ngilu’s meeting with Gachagua adds to the ongoing discussions, but it remains to be seen whether the engagements will produce a formal alliance before the 2027 elections.
