South African government reacts to US AGOA move

The South African government is assessing the potential impact of the United State of America’s decision to withdraw South Africa’s benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), with effect from January.

Washington has accused Pretoria of failing to make sufficient progress in combating corruption and removing barriers to American trade and investment.

Department of Trade, Industry and Competition spokesperson Kaamil Alli says government will provide support on a company-by-company basis while retaining measures introduced in response to earlier US tariffs.

“Government will undertake further engagement with social partners to optimise support measures aimed at improving resilience and sustainability of the productive sectors. while diversifying exports and improving jobs,” said Alli.

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau said last Thursday that South Africa would have 60 days to appeal its potential removal from AGOA before any suspension could take effect.
