NSCDC Intensifies Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Mining, Warns Unlicensed Operators
According to The Sun Nigeria news on November 3, 2026, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified enforcement operations across the country as part of efforts to curb illegal mining, enforce compliance with mining regulations and promote safety in the solid minerals sector.
The latest enforcement operation was conducted in Nasarawa State in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer and other officials responsible for regulating mining activities in the state.
The NSCDC explained that the exercise was designed to ensure that mining operators complied with existing mining laws, operational guidelines and safety regulations. The operation also formed part of the corps’ broader strategy to protect Nigeria’s mineral resources and discourage illegal mining activities.
Speaking on the ongoing enforcement campaign, the Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) Attah John Onoja, stated that the operations would continue across the country without a predetermined sequence.
He warned individuals and companies involved in mining activities against operating without valid licences and the necessary regulatory approvals. According to him, the corps would not tolerate violations of mining laws, adding that operators must ensure their activities meet the required legal and safety standards.
Onoja further emphasised the importance of regular monitoring and inspection of mining sites to prevent accidents and other operational dangers. He noted that strict compliance with safety regulations was necessary to prevent avoidable deaths, mine collapses and other incidents capable of threatening the lives of workers and members of host communities.
The Mining Marshals commander also called on stakeholders in the solid minerals sector to adopt responsible mining practices and operate within the provisions of the law. He warned that anyone found violating relevant regulations would face appropriate enforcement measures.
The NSCDC stated that the nationwide enforcement drive was in line with the commitment of its Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to support the policy objectives of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake.
The corps added that the initiative was aimed at reducing illegal mining, preventing government revenue losses, improving workplace safety and creating a more transparent and attractive environment for investors in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.
It further reaffirmed its determination to protect the country’s mineral resources, strengthen regulatory compliance and ensure that mining activities are conducted responsibly for the benefit of the nation.
