Gachagua Takes a Dig at Justin Muturi, Questions His Ability to Challenge Ruto in 2027
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken a fresh swipe at former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, questioning his political influence and ability to mobilise voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In remarks directed at Muturi, Gachagua appeared to challenge the former Attorney General to demonstrate his political strength at the grassroots level instead of lecturing other opposition leaders about numbers and the presidential race.
Gachagua questioned why Muturi wanted to help the opposition remove President William Ruto from power yet allegedly struggled to mobilise voters at his own polling station during the previous election.
“My brother from Mbeere, I honestly don’t know what the problem is. You claim you want to help us get rid of Kasongo, yet at your own polling station, you were only able to mobilise 35 people,” Gachagua said.
He went on to cite the alleged 238-vote margin by which President Ruto defeated Muturi, arguing that the former Speaker had no moral authority to lecture him about political numbers.
“Kasongo defeated you by 238 votes, and you still want to lecture Riggy G about numbers? If you cannot deliver at your own polling station, what makes you think you can deliver the presidency?” Gachagua posed.
The remarks are likely to deepen the differences between the two politicians as opposition leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
Muturi has recently been vocal about the need for unity within the United Opposition, warning against individual politicians behaving as though they own the political formation.
He has also argued that no Kenyan president has ever ascended to power through the support of one community alone, insisting that winning the presidency requires national consensus and the ability to unite voters across ethnic and regional boundaries.
His remarks appeared to caution Gachagua against actions that could undermine cooperation among opposition leaders.
However, Gachagua’s latest comments suggest that the disagreements within the opposition extend beyond questions of unity to include political influence, grassroots mobilisation and individual presidential ambitions.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the exchanges are exposing the challenges facing opposition leaders as they attempt to agree on a common strategy and establish who has the political numbers to challenge Ruto.
The latest confrontation also raises questions about whether the United Opposition can maintain cohesion amid growing disagreements among its key figures.
