Thierry Henry Wins South African Hearts as French Legend Makes Surprise isiZulu Effort

French football icon Thierry Henry has captured the attention of South African football fans after reportedly learning a few isiZulu words during his recent visit to the country. The former Arsenal and France striker was fascinated by the vibrant atmosphere surrounding the famous Soweto Derby.

Henry travelled to South Africa for the highly anticipated encounter between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026. His visit was facilitated by Betway, where he serves as a global ambassador, and formed part of celebrations marking 30 years of the Premier Soccer League.

The former Barcelona and Arsenal star experienced one of Africa’s biggest football rivalries while interacting with local supporters and exploring the country’s rich football culture.

Speaking to SuperSport TV, Henry expressed his admiration for the unique relationship between Pirates and Chiefs supporters. He was particularly impressed by the sight of rival fans sitting together, walking alongside one another and sharing the same stadium without hostility.

Henry also revealed his appreciation for former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Doctor Khumalo, whom he remembered watching during his professional playing career.

His connection with South Africa dates back to 1997, when he represented France against Bafana Bafana.

Reports of Henry learning isiZulu have further excited local fans, who appreciate his willingness to embrace their language and traditions.

The visit coincided with Orlando Pirates’ memorable 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs.

Henry’s experience highlighted how football can unite people across different cultures, creating meaningful connections beyond the boundaries of the pitch.
