German Newspaper Alleges Millions Ruto Will Pay Bayern Munich For Playing Ajak In Kenya

President William Ruto’s government could face scrutiny over the reported KSh 724.6 million fee Bayern Munich will receive for playing Ajax Amsterdam in a friendly match in Nairobi on January 5, 2027.

German media reports indicate that the German football giants will pocket €5 million, equivalent to approximately KSh 724.6 million, for the fixture. The amount was reported on October 31 by Bayern Munich news account @iMiaSanMia, citing German newspaper TZ. However, neither the Kenyan government nor the club has officially confirmed the figure.

The match will mark the official opening of the 60,000-seater Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City along Ngong Road. The facility is being prepared ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi have maintained that taxpayers will not finance the event, insisting it will be commercially sponsored.

However, citizens have petitioned the Milimani Law Court seeking disclosure of sponsorship agreements, corporate backers and expenditure details. They also want assurances that no public funds will be allocated to the event.
