VAR Drama in Soweto: Furious Pirates Coach Ouaddou Exposes The Truth Behind Disallowed Goal
Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou of the Orlando Pirates expressed his displeasure with his team’s missed scoring chances and questioned the decision to deny Oswin Appollis’ goal in the 2-1 Soweto Derby win against Kaizer Chiefs.
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, at FNB Stadium, the much-anticipated Betway Premiership match took place. After a fierce struggle, Pirates were able to claim the bragging rights.
Although the win was a huge lift for the Buccaneers, Ouaddou isn’t happy with the decision to call Appollis’ attempt offside and thinks his team could have scored more goals.
The Pirates coach told reporters after the game that he needed more time to think over the disallowed goal before making a decision.
I believe it is necessary to discuss our aim if we are going to talk about the opportunities we failed to take. The referee, Ouaddou, expressed uncertainty on whether or not the play was offside.
The judgement concerning Appollis is sure to get attention from spectators debating the match, adding another talking point to an already dramatic Soweto Derby, thanks to his remarks.
Nevertheless, Ouaddou refrained from levelling a conclusive charge, stating that he need time to examine the situation in order to determine whether the authorities had taken the right decision.
In addition to the disallowed attempt, Ouaddou was worried that his team was missing a number of good scoring chances.
The Pirates came into the derby with a goal of beating their long-time rivals, but they were outplayed, especially in the first half.
After Yanela Mbuthuma put the Buccaneers on the board in the first half, Tshepang Moremi scored the game-winning goal in the second half to seal the deal. To keep the game close, Kaizer Chiefs used Pule Mmodi to react.
Although they came out on top, Ouaddou still thinks his team has to improve their finishing skills if they want to keep competing at a high level on the continental and local levels.
In light of the upcoming tough schedule, the Pirates coach has stressed over and again the need to enhance his team’s finishing.
A team’s ability to convert scoring chances on a regular basis is the difference between a comfortable victory and a game where the other side is able to rally.
Although the Soweto Derby triumph is a major accomplishment for Pirates, the wasted opportunities and Appollis’ goal that was disallowed have added fuel to the fire.
Now that they have a win, Ouaddou will want his team to improve upon the areas that were lacking in the match.
While the team’s fans revel in the derby win, the coach has made it clear that he isn’t going to let their joy cloud his judgement on how to improve the squad as a whole.
