Reactions Trail Chidi Odinkalu’s Comment After Door Of Kaaba Was Opened For President Tinubu

Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has sparked reactions on social media following his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other political leaders over their recent visit to Saudi Arabia.

The controversy emerged after the door of the Holy Kaaba in Makkah was opened for Tinubu during his visit, where he joined some state governors and other members of his delegation in prayers for Nigeria.

Reacting to the development, Odinkalu took to his official X account to question the purpose of the religious visit, making a remark that appeared to accuse Nigerian politicians of seeking divine assistance while allegedly engaging in electoral malpractice.

In his post, the former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission challenged the political leaders over their decision to seek prayers in Makkah while questioning their relationship with traditional religious beliefs in Nigeria.

According to Odinkalu on his official X account, he wrote: “You go to Makkah to pray for grace to return to Nigeria to rig election. Why are you afraid of praying to Ogun, Egbesu and Amadioha?”.

His comments quickly attracted attention, with several social media users sharing their opinions about the statement and the circumstances surrounding Tinubu’s visit to the Islamic holy site.

The discussion also brought renewed attention to the opening of the Kaaba’s door for the Nigerian president, a development that had generated public interest following the circulation of videos and reports from the visit.

While Odinkalu’s post focused on the conduct of politicians and electoral concerns, the reactions online reflected differing views about his criticism and the president’s religious activities.

The statement has further fuelled conversations about religion, politics and accountability in Nigeria, particularly as political activities continue ahead of the 2027 general election.
