Mahama has become a permanent tenant in NPP members’ minds – Edudzi
National Petroleum Authority CEO Edudzi Tamakloe has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of becoming excessively preoccupied with President John Dramani Mahama, arguing that the party’s decision to challenge the constitutional term-limit provisions at the Supreme Court reflects its inability to move beyond its 2024 electoral defeat.
Speaking on New Day on TV3, Tamakloe said the NPP had lost focus and was allowing its political anxieties to dictate its public engagements.
“The 2024 electoral defeat has created a certain mental vacuum as far as the NPP’s engagement with the public is concerned. Complete mental vacuum,” he said.
He argued that rather than addressing the reasons behind its poor electoral performance and developing a convincing political message, the opposition party had turned its attention to an issue he considers unnecessary.
Tamakloe said President Mahama had become a constant subject of concern within the NPP, describing him as a “permanent tenant” in the minds of its members.
“Today, as we speak, President John Dramani Mahama has become a permanent tenant in the minds of NPP people, and that is what it is,” he said.
He questioned why the party was investing energy in a constitutional challenge when it should be examining its electoral weaknesses and reconnecting with voters.
Tamakloe cited the NPP’s performance in the 2024 elections, saying its presidential candidate failed to win a constituency in four regions and secured only 77 constituencies nationally.
He also pointed to the party’s performance in the Ashanti Region, which he said accounted for about 43 of the 77 constituencies won by the NPP.
“What is the solution to that problem? It is not to make President Mahama a permanent tenant in your mind,” he said.
He added that the party needed to confront the challenges affecting its political fortunes instead of pursuing what he described as speculative actions.
