Cedi Will Not Mess Up Christmas, BoG Governor Promises
Ghanaians are worried about the dollar again. But the Bank of Ghana says relax.
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has promised that the exchange rate will be stable as we go into Christmas.
He said this on Monday, November 2, 2026, while speaking at the African Virtual Assets Summit (AVAS) in Accra. Many traders and businesses were scared that the cedi will fall hard like it did in previous years.
“I can promise you a good Christmas so far as the exchange rate is concerned. We will have a good Christmas.” – Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor, Bank of Ghana
Every year towards Christmas, demand for dollars goes up. Importers need dollars to bring in goods for the festive season. This usually puts pressure on the cedi and pushes prices up.
But the Governor says this year will be different. He is confident in the cedi’s performance.
Currently, the Bank of Ghana’s interbank rate shows the cedi trading at GH¢11.61 buying and GH¢11.62 selling to one US dollar. The pound is around GH¢15.55 and Euro around GH¢12.95.
Prices of imported Christmas goods may not shoot up
Your Christmas shopping will not be hit by a sudden dollar rise
The Governor says the Bank has enough reserves to support the market.
For now, Ghanaians will be watching. Many have heard such promises before. But this time, the BoG boss says – your Christmas will be good.
