Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC, popularly known as KenGen, has appointed Prof. Eng. John Kipngetich Mosonik as the new chairperson of its Board of Directors.
The company announced the appointment in a notice dated Monday, November 2, 2026, following a board meeting held earlier that day in Nairobi.
KenGen said the appointment places an experienced technocrat at the helm of its board as the electricity producer pursues its long-term strategic objectives and priorities.
Mosonik brings more than 35 years of executive experience across public and private sectors, with expertise in telecommunications engineering, infrastructure, energy and strategic governance.
His professional background includes senior leadership roles in engineering, infrastructure development and national projects, giving him experience in managing complex institutions and major programmes.
He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and a registered engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya, according to KenGen.
His academic qualifications include a Doctorate in Business Administration in Strategic Leadership from Northcentral University in the United States, adding to his professional credentials.
He also holds a PhD in Strategic Management from Moi University, Kenya, alongside postgraduate studies in digital transformation, finance and project management at universities abroad.
Mosonik earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, specialising in Telecommunications, from the University of Nairobi, where he completed his undergraduate studies.
During his tenure as Principal Secretary for Infrastructure, he spearheaded the development of 6,000 kilometres of rural roads across all 47 counties in Kenya.
KenGen also credited him with pioneering major telecommunications and oil and gas projects, as well as contributing to the formulation of national industrialisation policy.
He currently serves as Chancellor of Rongo University and Associate Professor of Business Strategy and Digital Transformation at Kenya Highlands University, according to the announcement.
Within KenGen, Mosonik has also served as a Non-Executive Director and chaired the Strategy Committee, overseeing work linked to the company’s strategic direction and priorities.
His experience in engineering, leadership, infrastructure and corporate governance is expected to support KenGen’s ambition of strengthening its position as a leading energy solutions provider.
KenGen is pursuing its G2G 2034 strategy and national geothermal ambitions, areas expected to remain central to the board’s oversight under the new chairperson.
The board congratulated Mosonik on his appointment, expressing confidence that his leadership would guide the company as it delivers sustainable energy solutions for Kenya’s development.
