Woman with longest nails in world hasn’t cut nails since 1997

A woman whose extraordinary fingernails have earned her a place in the Guinness World Records has finally revealed how she manages one of life’s most basic activities — using the toilet.

Diana Armstrong, from Minnesota in the United States, has attracted worldwide attention because of her incredibly long fingernails, which have continued growing for nearly three decades. Her nails have not been trimmed since 1997, and their combined length was officially measured at an astonishing 42 feet and 10.4 inches (1,306.58 centimetres), making her a Guinness World Records holder.

While many people admire her unusual appearance, others have been left wondering how she manages ordinary daily activities with nails stretching several feet from her hands. Among the questions frequently directed at her is how she uses public toilets without damaging or struggling with her exceptionally long nails.

During an interview with Guinness World Records, Armstrong opened up about her bathroom routine, explaining that she has developed special techniques to make things easier.

According to Armstrong, using the toilet is not particularly different from what other people do, although she has to handle her nails differently.

She revealed that she uses considerably more toilet paper than an ordinary person because she cannot wrap it around her hand in the usual manner.

“I use a lot of toilet paper. I don’t wrap it around my hand like some people do, I can’t do it like that, because it isn’t going to work that way,” she explained.

Her unusual fingernails have also forced her to change how she washes her hands. Instead of rubbing both hands together after applying soap, she cleans them one at a time, carefully working around the lengthy nails.

**Why she only uses the biggest public toilet stalls**

Armstrong disclosed that visiting public washrooms requires careful planning because the length of her fingernails makes smaller toilet stalls difficult to use.

Whenever she visits a public restroom, she specifically looks for the largest available cubicle. If someone is already using it, she has no option but to wait until they finish because the smaller stalls cannot comfortably accommodate her nails.

“When I go to a public restroom, I go to the stall that is the biggest. If someone is in that stall I have to wait until they’ve finished and then go in because I can’t use the smaller ones because my nails are longer than them,” she told Guinness World Records.

Her challenges, however, extend far beyond using public washrooms.

Armstrong revealed that she can no longer drive because controlling a steering wheel with her exceptionally long fingernails is almost impossible. She explained that she would have to stick her hand outside the car window to operate the steering wheel.

Simple activities such as zipping trousers and jackets have also become difficult. On some occasions, she even needs a knife to open soda cans.

**The heartbreaking story behind her decision never to cut her nails**

Behind Armstrong’s extraordinary fingernails lies an emotional family story that makes her world record even more remarkable.

Her decision to stop cutting her nails dates back to 1997, when she suffered the devastating loss of her 16-year-old daughter, Latisha, who died following an asthma attack.

Before her untimely death, Latisha had developed a special tradition with her mother. Every weekend, she would spend time polishing and filing Armstrong’s fingernails, turning the activity into a cherished mother-daughter moment.

However, after losing her daughter, Armstrong found it extremely difficult to continue with the routine.

She decided never to cut her nails again, allowing them to grow as a lasting reminder of the special bond they shared.

Recalling the painful experience, Armstrong described losing her daughter as the worst day of her life.

“The day before, she’d spent time polishing and filing my nails, so after that, I just couldn’t cut my nails off,” she revealed.

Today, Armstrong’s extraordinary fingernails have made her internationally recognised, attracting curiosity and admiration from people across the world.

Although her record-breaking nails come with numerous inconveniences, their story goes beyond appearance and worldwide recognition. For Armstrong, they represent a deeply personal connection to a daughter whose memory she continues to cherish nearly three decades after her tragic death.
