Bank of Ghana to Launch Upgraded Cedi Banknotes on November 3

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to introduce an upgraded series of Ghana cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, on November 3, 2026, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s currency and strengthen its security features.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced the development following the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting on September 24, 2026.

The new banknotes are expected to feature enhanced security measures, improved durability and modern designs reflecting Ghana’s heritage, culture and national identity.

According to Dr Asiama, the existing cedi banknote designs have been in circulation for more than two decades. He explained that advances in technology, changes in currency circulation and increasingly sophisticated security standards have made it necessary for the central bank to upgrade the notes.

The Heritage Series is designed to provide stronger protection against counterfeiting while improving the durability of banknotes to withstand frequent handling and prolonged circulation.

The new designs will also incorporate Ghanaian cultural and historical elements, providing an opportunity to honour national heroes and celebrate the country’s identity. The initiative is expected to give the national currency a modern appearance while preserving its importance as a symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty.

The upgraded series will cover the existing denominations of GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200. The Bank of Ghana has clarified that the exercise is an upgrade of existing denominations and does not involve introducing a GH¢500 note.

Meanwhile, the introduction of the Heritage Series will not make the current banknotes invalid. Dr Asiama has assured the public that the existing notes will remain legal tender and circulate alongside the upgraded versions.

He has therefore advised Ghanaians not to rush to exchange or withdraw their current banknotes because of the new development.

The Governor has also appealed to traders, businesses, financial institutions and members of the public to handle banknotes properly to preserve their quality and reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency.

He cautioned against practices such as crumpling, writing on, stapling, spraying and using banknotes for decorative purposes, including money bouquets.

The Bank of Ghana says the introduction of the Heritage Series forms part of its broader commitment to maintaining a secure, durable and efficient currency system.

The official launch is scheduled to take place on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.
