Afenyo-Markin vs Sammy Gyamfi: New Twist As SG’s Lawyers Move To Set Aside Defamation Suit
Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s previous comments in praise of Nana Akufo-Addo have returned to public discussion following criticism of current Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
In an earlier report, Torkornoo reportedly described Akufo-Addo as a “champion of justice” who upheld the rule of law. The statement has resurfaced on social media, prompting questions about whether she received the same level of scrutiny now directed at Baffoe-Bonnie.
Dzifa Gunu, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Digital Centre, is among those questioning the apparent difference in public reactions to the two judicial figures.
Baffoe-Bonnie faced criticism after a video emerged showing him assessing the performance of various state institutions and making comparisons between the current NDC government and the previous NPP administration.
The NPP has called on him to retract his comments or step down, insisting that his position requires strict political neutrality. PAGA has also reportedly demanded his resignation, while some civil society organisations and legal commentators have questioned whether a sitting Chief Justice should publicly assess a government’s performance.
His supporters, however, argue that the criticism reflects double standards, pointing to Torkornoo’s earlier praise of Akufo-Addo.
The disagreement has renewed debate over judicial independence, political neutrality and the responsibilities of Ghana’s highest-ranking judicial officers.
