Cracks in Opposition Intensify as Justin Muturi Puts United Opposition on Notice Over Gachagua
Democratic Party of Kenya leader Justin Muturi has issued a stern statement against DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of political bullying, double-speak and self-sabotage within the United Opposition.
In the statement from his office, Muturi said Gachagua must understand that no Kenyan president has ever been made by one community alone. He argued that the presidency is won through national consensus, strategic alliances and the ability to unite Kenyans across ethnic and regional boundaries.
Muturi put the United Opposition on notice, saying Gachagua’s current political trajectory raises serious questions about his commitment to the collective presidential ambition of the Wantam movement.
He accused him of persistently undermining established cooperation, and said his insistence on tripartite arrangements risks creating the impression that he is preparing for post-election bargaining rather than prioritising State House.
“Is the objective to win the presidency or to control MPs, legislators and devolved units while sacrificing the bigger national ambition?” he posed.
The DP leader said building a winning national coalition requires compromise, maturity and strategic thinking, adding that a tripartite arrangement is not a magic formula for State House.
“No individual owns the United Opposition, and no community has a monopoly on Kenya’s presidency,” he said, insisting that partnerships must be built on mutual respect, not ultimatums or supremacy contests.
Muturi also reminded Gachagua of his family’s political history. He recalled that Gachagua’s late brother, Nderitu Gachagua, won the gubernatorial contest against TNA, the vehicle that produced President Uhuru Kenyatta, despite GNU supporting Uhuru.
According to Muturi, this shows that political alliances are complex and no formation belongs to one individual.
He further questioned the assumption that three separate political formations can automatically deliver the Wantam presidency, saying Kenya’s presidential politics cannot be reduced to ethnic arithmetic, regional strongholds or individual bargaining.
The statement adds to mounting tension in the opposition over power sharing ahead of the 2027 General Election.
