How can two senior party figures sit beside each other without even greeting one another? – Nation
Social commentator and political analyst Kweku Daniel has launched a strong criticism of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, specifically mentioning former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. In a Facebook post, he shared a video showing the painful experiences of retired citizens, claiming that more than 800 pensioners had died after their funds were included in the controversial domestic debt restructuring programme.
Daniel used the situation to revisit the human consequences of Ghana’s economic crisis under the previous administration. He highlighted the difficult economic conditions at the time, including the cedi reportedly reaching GH¢17 to the dollar, inflation rising to 54 per cent, the government’s inability to meet its debt obligations and Ghana losing access to international credit markets.
He argued that these economic difficulties were not simply statistics but had serious consequences for ordinary citizens. According to his commentary, some pensioners were unable to access their savings, leaving many vulnerable to financial hardship, emotional trauma and severe health challenges. He also linked the situation to reports of deaths, paralysis and prolonged suffering among affected retirees.
Daniel further criticised opposition figures for using increases in transport fares and accommodation costs to attack the current Mahama administration. He questioned their criticism of a Kumasi transport fare rising from GH¢100 to GH¢120 and hostel fees increasing from GH¢5,000 to GH¢7,000 over a two-year period, arguing that such adjustments should be considered against the economic conditions inherited by the current government.
He expressed frustration with attempts to use these cost increases to campaign for a return to power, insisting that those who presided over the previous economic crisis should not ignore the hardship experienced by pensioners and other citizens during their time in office.
His comments have renewed discussions about political accountability, economic recovery and the lasting effects of government policies on ordinary Ghanaians. Daniel’s central argument is that leaders who were responsible for decisions that contributed to severe economic hardship must be held accountable rather than presenting themselves as critics of the challenges facing the country today.
