Ghana will become hostile territory for drug traffickers – Security Analyst
Security analyst Richard Kumadoe says Ghana is intensifying efforts to combat international drug trafficking, warning that individuals who use the country as a transit point could be arrested either within Ghana or at their final destinations.
He said security agencies were strengthening intelligence-sharing arrangements and international partnerships to identify suspected traffickers and disrupt criminal networks operating across borders.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr Kumadoe explained that authorities could deploy controlled delivery operations to track suspicious consignments, allowing shipments to move under surveillance to help identify and arrest other people involved in the trafficking chain.
“If you use our territory or our environment, here it will become very hostile to you in such a way that we either get you arrested here or we will send you with a package away with a tip-off so that you’ll be arrested wherever you are going as your final destination,” he said.
His remarks followed the arrest of a Syrian passenger in Lebanon after 46.7 kilogrammes of cocaine were found in his luggage. The passenger, identified only as B.H., had travelled from Accra to Beirut on a Middle East Airlines flight.
Mr Kumadoe said the seizure was the outcome of a controlled delivery operation involving security authorities in Ghana and Lebanon, aimed at tracing other individuals connected to the consignment.
He said the operation highlighted the value of intelligence-driven enforcement, explaining that security agencies must work across national boundaries to track suspects and dismantle trafficking networks, rather than focus only on intercepting drugs at ports of entry and exit.
He further stressed that closer collaboration among security agencies, alongside investment in modern screening technology, would be essential to preventing criminal networks from using Ghana as a transit corridor.
