Helen Zille Can Not Win Joburg But If You Use Money, She Will Win” An Analyst Breaks Silence

A political scientist has said that, when compared to the current election data and statistics, Helen Zille’s bid for the mayoralty of Johannesburg poses a formidable obstacle; nonetheless, campaign funds have the potential to significantly alter the current political climate.

The analyst’s remarks are timed to coincide with the upcoming 4 November 2026 local government elections in South Africa. Zille is running for mayor of Johannesburg as a candidate for the Democratic Alliance. With 270 seats available, the DA is aiming for a simple majority.

In order to get the majority she is aiming for, Zille has said that she needs about 490,000 people to back the DA on both ballots. The DA earned 482,653 votes in Johannesburg’s 2021 municipal elections, giving them 71 out of 270 council seats. In contrast, the ANC received 620,289 votes, giving them 91 seats.

The analyst seems to be referring to campaign finance and its function in organising, advertising, and voter mobilising. It is not conclusive that more expenditure would result in a majority vote on its own.

Various polls conducted in September also yielded different results for the Johannesburg race. The Daily Maverick cited polls showing that the DA had 42% support in July from the Social Research Foundation and 31% support from the ANC from Ipsos. The inconsistency in the results shows how close the election is and how polls can’t be trusted.

Zille has also pointed to voter apathy as a key issue, claiming that some Democrats do not cast ballots. The percentage of eligible voters in Johannesburg who cast ballots in the 2021 election was 42.6%.

Thus, the analyst’s comment draws attention to two separate elements: the current electoral math and campaigns’ capacities to mobilise supporters and assets. The municipal election system and the results of the 4 November voting will determine the final make-up of the Johannesburg council.
