South Africa introduces four new coins in 2026
South Africans will see four new commemorative coins entering circulation in 2026 with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) using the designs to celebrate important milestones in the country’s history.
The new coins form part of a national programme called Milestones of Freedom, which commemorates significant events in South Africa’s journey towards democracy.
Unlike special collector coins that are sold at premium prices, these new coins are intended for everyday use and can be received as change when shopping or making payments.
The four coins celebrate education, the fight against apartheid and the contributions of important figures in South African history.
This R2 coin marks 50 years since the Soweto uprising, when thousands of schoolchildren protested against apartheid education policies on 16 June 1976.
This R2 coin celebrates 125 years since Charlotte Maxeke became the first black South African woman to graduate with a university degree in 1901.
The coin commemorates 70 years since approximately 20000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against apartheid pass laws.
The final R2 design celebrates 30 years since the adoption of South Africa’s democratic Constitution in 1996.
The South African Reserve Bank confirmed that the commemorative coins form part of its 2026 coin programme.
The initial coins became legal tender on 16 June 2026 with further designs launched during the year.
Importantly, these coins retain their ordinary monetary value. An R2 commemorative coin is still worth R2 regardless of its historical significance.
SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago has encouraged South Africans to keep the coins circulating rather than simply storing them away.
The coins also provide an opportunity to recognise historical figures and events that have shaped the country.
Two of the commemorative designs honour women’s contributions to South Africa’s history.
According to the Reserve Bank the Charlotte Maxeke and Women’s March coins are the first South African commemorative circulation coins to feature women.
The designs form part of a broader effort to recognise individuals and communities whose contributions to the country’s democratic journey have often received less attention.
For ordinary South Africans, the biggest difference is that these historical milestones could soon be appearing in their wallets, tills and everyday cash transactions.
Four new designs but the same familiar rand value.
