Man Arrested in South Africa for Allegedly Insulting Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on Social
Max Makhanya, who recently drew wide attention on social media for his remarks about KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has reportedly been arrested in KwaMashu.
According to circulating reports, he was taken into custody after attending a rally organised by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in KwaMashu. The reported arrest follows a TikTok video in which he criticised General Mkhwanazi and allegedly insulted him. In the recording, he could reportedly be heard asking the commissioner why police officers were turning against the very people they are meant to protect. He also allegedly made several offensive remarks about the senior police official.
The video spread quickly, and social media users shared a range of opinions about what Makhanya said and how he said it. He reportedly deleted the original from his TikTok account, but by then other people had already downloaded and reposted it, so copies are still available on other platforms.
The reports of his arrest have raised the question of whether the video played any part in his detention. Some accounts suggest his remarks about Mkhwanazi may have contributed to the arrest at the rally. None of this has been independently verified, and there is no official confirmation of any link between the TikTok video and the arrest. It is also unclear what charges, if any, he faces.
The case has also prompted debate about where the line lies between criticising police conduct and making statements that could be unlawful. South Africans have constitutional protection for freedom of expression, but the exact circumstances of the arrest would have to be established before any conclusions can be drawn.
For now, the claims remain unconfirmed. The South African Police Service or other authorities would need to say why Makhanya was arrested, whether he is still in custody and whether the video had anything to do with it.
