Sakumono murder: Police retrieve pistol, 7 rounds of ammunition as 72-year-old suspect is arrested

A 72-year-old man suspected of killing Irene Atubiga and her uncle, George Atubiga, at Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region has been arrested at Tikrom, near Ejisu, in the Ashanti Region.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in a statement issued on Monday, November 2, identified the suspect as Samuel Christopher Osei Anto and said he was arrested at his hideout on Sunday, November 1.

Police also disclosed that a Smith & Wesson pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition were found on him during the arrest.

According to the statement, officers acted on intelligence about the suspect’s location before moving to the hideout, where they apprehended him and retrieved the firearm and ammunition.

The arrest follows the fatal shooting of Irene, 47, and her uncle, George, 57, at their residence in NTHC Estate, Sakumono, on Friday, October 30, 2026.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the killings may have stemmed from a financial disagreement between the suspect and George Atubiga.

Police said the suspect had allegedly borrowed GH¢500,000 from George but had failed to repay the amount.

An earlier police account indicated that the suspect went to the victims’ residence with a 47-year-old woman, identified as Beatrice Mumuni, to demand repayment of the money. A misunderstanding reportedly ensued and escalated into the fatal shooting.

The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations.

The firearm and ammunition recovered during the arrest have been retained by the Police as exhibits.
