Ghana Health Service Boss Says No Cholera Cases Were Recorded During Presidential Flood Response

Ghana Health Service Director-General Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea has highlighted the importance of national cooperation in protecting public health, pointing to the country’s response during the recent flooding situation as an example of what can be achieved through collective efforts.

Dr Akoriyea noted that no cholera cases were recorded during the period when President John Dramani Mahama mobilised the country to respond to the flooding crisis. He used the observation to emphasise the importance of preparedness, coordination and public participation in preventing disease outbreaks during emergencies.

According to him, protecting the health of citizens should not become a political contest, as public health threats affect everyone regardless of their political affiliations. He therefore urged Ghanaians to put political differences aside and support efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to respond to health emergencies.

His comments come amid growing discussions about Ghana’s preparedness to deal with public health challenges, particularly during periods of flooding, when contaminated water, poor sanitation and overcrowded living conditions can increase the risk of infectious diseases such as cholera.

The Ghana Health Service continues to rely on public cooperation, effective surveillance and preventive measures to minimise the spread of diseases.

Dr Akoriyea’s remarks underline the need for citizens, government institutions and other stakeholders to work together rather than allow political disagreements to undermine public health initiatives.

He stressed that safeguarding lives must remain a shared national responsibility, with cooperation and preparedness taking priority over partisan interests.
