Ghana, Russia to pursue 2,000MW nuclear power plant

Ghana and Russia have agreed to pursue the establishment of a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s energy security and accelerate industrialisation.

The commitment was secured during bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow.

The proposed nuclear facility is expected to provide a major boost to Ghana’s electricity generation capacity and support the country’s long-term industrial development ambitions.

The initiative also revives the vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who initiated preparations towards nuclear energy development before the 1966 coup.

Beyond the energy sector, the two leaders discussed broader cooperation in defence, agriculture, education and other strategic areas.

In defence, the countries agreed to strengthen military cooperation, including arrangements for the acquisition of strategic military assets for the Ghana Armed Forces.

On agriculture, Russia and Ghana will deepen collaboration to increase grain production and improve access to fertilisers.

President Putin also pledged to expand scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students studying in Russia. Ghana currently ranks second among African countries in the number of students enrolled in Russian institutions.

On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, President Putin assured President Mahama that steps would be taken to prevent Ghanaians from participating in the war, whether through irregular recruitment or voluntary enlistment.

The two countries are also expected to revive the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation, with Moscow scheduled to host the next meeting in the coming weeks.

Ghana and Russia established diplomatic relations in 1958. The latest engagements are aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening ties across key sectors of mutual interest.
