DJ Sumbody’s Murder Takes a New Turn as Taxi Boss Makes Serious Revelations at Madlanga Commission

The murder of popular South African musician and businessman Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody, has attracted renewed attention following revelations made at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. Testimony presented during the proceedings has brought fresh focus to the circumstances surrounding his death and possible connections to violence within the taxi industry.

DJ Sumbody was gunned down on 20 November 2022 in Woodmead, Johannesburg, alongside his two bodyguards, Armand Swart and Hector Buthelezi. The shocking incident sent shockwaves through South Africa’s entertainment industry, leaving fans, colleagues and family members demanding answers about the people responsible for the attack.

During the commission’s proceedings, controversial taxi boss Joe ‘Ferrari’ Sibanyoni made statements linking the musician’s murder to relationships involving individuals within the taxi industry. Sibanyoni told the inquiry that he knew DJ Sumbody through the musician’s father, who had connections to the Pretoria Mabopane Petersburg Taxi Association.

He further suggested that DJ Sumbody and another entertainer, Seunkie ‘DJ Vettys’ Mokubung, were targeted because of their alleged associations with individuals close to him. His testimony has raised questions about possible links between organised criminal networks, the taxi industry and violent attacks involving prominent South Africans.

Sibanyoni also discussed alleged assassination attempts against him, claiming that he had survived two separate attacks, including one in August 2022. He described the difficult relationships and tensions involving other influential figures within the taxi industry.

However, the allegations presented during the commission remain subject to further examination and do not establish who planned or executed DJ Sumbody’s murder.

Meanwhile, businessman Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe and three co-accused remain at the centre of the criminal proceedings connected to the killings of DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards. Their trial at the Johannesburg High Court has been postponed to 19 July 2027.

The latest testimony has renewed public interest in the investigation, while DJ Sumbody’s family and supporters continue to await justice.
