Max Makhanya Arrested at a Rally For Reportedly Swearing at Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi

Prominent uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) activist Max Makhanya has reportedly been arrested while attending the party’s final election rally in KwaMashu, Durban.

The arrest was confirmed by Labour Against Corruption Organisation (LACO) leader Mlungisi Zondi, who disclosed that Makhanya had been taken into custody.

Zondi, however, did not provide specific details about the circumstances surrounding the arrest or the charges Makhanya may be facing. He indicated that legal representatives were already in contact with the activist following his detention.

Meanwhile, reports circulating on social media suggest that Makhanya may have been arrested over alleged insulting remarks directed at KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

A video purportedly linked to the incident has also been widely shared online, although the circumstances surrounding the footage and its connection to the arrest have not been independently established.

Makhanya’s detention took place as MKP supporters gathered in KwaMashu for the party’s rally ahead of the 4 November 2026 local government elections.

Further information regarding the reason for his arrest, possible charges and whether he will appear in court is still awaited.
