Ghana Secures Major Nuclear Power Deal With Russia As 2,000MW Plant Set To Be Built
According to a report by GHOne TV on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Ghana and Russia have agreed to work together towards the construction of a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant to strengthen Ghana’s electricity supply and support industrialisation.
The agreement follows bilateral discussions between President John Dramani Mahama and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Third Russia-Africa Summit held in Moscow.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development in a statement outlining the major commitments secured by President Mahama during his engagement with the Russian leader.
According to the Minister, the proposed nuclear power plant is expected to play an important role in improving Ghana’s energy security and providing reliable electricity to support industrial growth.
He described the agreement as a revival of the vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who initiated preparations towards establishing a nuclear power facility in the country before the 1966 coup interrupted the plans.
The latest development also comes after President Mahama disclosed that Ghana had begun discussions with Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, regarding the country’s nuclear energy ambitions.
Beyond the nuclear power project, Ghana and Russia have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in other important sectors, including defence, agriculture and education.
The two countries are expected to pursue a new defence agreement to support the acquisition of strategic military equipment for the Ghana Armed Forces. They will also expand agricultural cooperation to improve grain production and access to fertilisers.
Additionally, Russia has agreed to increase scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students, while both countries plan to revive their Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation.
The proposed nuclear power project represents an important step in Ghana’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and secure the reliable electricity needed to support economic development and industrialisation.
