KRA Announces Major Tax Deadline Change: Kenyans to File Returns by April 30 From 2027

The Kenya Revenue Authority has announced a major change to the annual income tax filing calendar, requiring individual taxpayers to submit their returns by April 30 instead of the traditional June 30 deadline starting in 2027.

The change follows amendments introduced under the Finance Act 2026 and will first apply to returns for the 2026 year of income, which Kenyans will file in 2027.

According to KRA, the revised deadline is intended to improve tax administration, encourage early compliance and reduce congestion on the iTax platform during the final days of the filing season.

The new timeline will affect individual taxpayers, including salaried employees whose income is taxed through the Pay As You Earn system and self-employed Kenyans required to submit annual income tax returns.

Taxpayers who are required to file nil returns will have an even earlier deadline of January 31, 2027, under the revised framework.

However, companies and other non-individual taxpayers will continue filing their returns by the last day of the sixth month after the end of their accounting period.

For companies whose accounting year ends in December, the deadline remains June 30.

KRA has urged taxpayers to familiarise themselves with the new dates and prepare their documents early to avoid penalties and last-minute complications.

Individuals who fail to file their returns on time risk a penalty of five per cent of the tax due or KSh2,000, whichever is higher.

Taxpayers are advised to organise their P9 forms, withholding tax certificates and other relevant financial records before submitting returns through iTax.

With the new rules taking effect in 2027, Kenyans are encouraged to adjust their tax calendars and avoid waiting until the deadline approaches.

The changes mark a significant shift in Kenya’s tax compliance system, making early preparation increasingly important for individuals and businesses alike.
