Senior ODM Politician Pulls Out DP Race in Ruto Gov’t, Maintains They Must Secure Running Position
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir Rules Himself Out of Deputy President Race but Insists ODM Must Get the Position
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir has announced that he is not interested in pursuing the Deputy President position for himself, while maintaining that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) should secure the running mate slot in any future political coalition arrangement.
The governor communicated his position during an interview on Citizen TV’s JKLive programme, where he discussed his political ambitions and the party’s expectations as discussions about future political alliances continue.
During the interview, Nassir explained that his approach to leadership has always been guided by a sense of responsibility rather than an overwhelming desire to occupy powerful government positions.
Reflecting on his political journey, he highlighted the challenges he had overcome to establish himself in Kenyan politics. He recalled competing against well-resourced opponents and individuals with significant political influence before successfully winning his parliamentary seat and later becoming Mombasa governor.
Despite his political achievements and experience in public leadership, Nassir maintained that becoming Deputy President was not something he was personally seeking at this particular moment.
His decision to withdraw himself from consideration, however, does not mean that he is prepared to see his party surrender its ambitions for the country’s second-highest office.
The governor stressed that ODM remains interested in securing the Deputy President position as part of any political agreement involving the party and its potential coalition partners.
His remarks suggest that although individual leaders may have different political ambitions, the party intends to approach future negotiations with a clear position on the distribution of senior government positions.
The development comes amid continuing discussions within ODM about its political future, strategic partnerships and the leadership arrangements that could emerge ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Nassir’s position also highlights the delicate balance between personal ambitions and collective party interests as political leaders consider possible alliances.
By ruling himself out while maintaining ODM’s demand for the running mate position, the Mombasa governor has indicated that his immediate priority is supporting the party’s broader political objectives rather than pursuing the office for personal gain.
As political consultations continue, ODM’s determination to secure the Deputy President position could become an important issue in negotiations with other political formations.
The party’s eventual success will depend on its bargaining strength, internal unity and the willingness of potential coalition partners to accommodate its demands.
