NLC Sets Agenda For Next Minimum Wage Negotiations, Lists Key Demands

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has outlined key issues for consideration in the next national minimum wage negotiations, according to a report by Vanguard on November 1, 2026. The union insists that discussions must reflect prevailing economic realities. It also wants preparations to begin early ahead of the next wage implementation.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, disclosed the position at the 2026 Labour Writers Association of Nigeria annual conference in Lagos. During The occasion, he highlighted inflation, the value of the naira, transportation, housing and workers’ purchasing power as major considerations. Ajaero added that the proposed wage must be determined using the cost-of-living index and prevailing inflationary trends rather than arbitrary figures that could quickly lose their value.

The labour leader warned against a situation where workers receive higher wages only for inflation to erode their purchasing power within a few months. Ajaero also called for sustainable government intervention in transportation. He argued that temporary relief measures should not be withdrawn without providing alternatives for struggling workers.

Interestingly, Ajaero also raised concerns about the welfare of Nigerian journalists. He lamented poor salaries, job insecurity, weak pension arrangements and inadequate social security protection.

Meanwhile, the NLC president challenged the Nigeria Union of Journalists to strengthen collective bargaining with media employers and negotiate better conditions of service for its members. He further advocated the revival of the proposed journalists’ village initiative and partnerships with mortgage institutions to help media workers own houses through affordable payment arrangements.

Ajaero maintained that the next minimum wage negotiations must consolidate existing gains and ensure that Nigerian workers enjoy meaningful improvements in their standard of living.
