How Ghanaians Reacted After Jennifer Defended Akwatia MP Amid Mockery Over ‘What Did I Steal’ Remark

According to a Facebook post on November 1, 2026, Political commentator Jennifer Oppong has come to the defence of the Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, following criticism and online mockery over a statement attributed to the legislator during a recent political discussion.

In a Facebook post, Oppong argued that some social media users had misquoted the MP by claiming he said, “What did I thief,” insisting that a closer listen to the recording showed he actually said, “What did I steal?”

She explained that she had listened to the recording several times and remained convinced that the legislator’s words were being misrepresented.

“I’ve seen people mocking this MP for saying ‘what did I thief’ but you can hear clearly he never said that. He rather said ‘what did I steal’?” she wrote.

“I played this many times and I wasn’t wrong,” she added.

Her comments come amid reactions to a heated exchange involving the Akwatia MP and New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications director Dennis Edward Aboagye during a recent edition of JoyNews’ Newsfile programme.

The confrontation reportedly involved sharp exchanges, with Aboagye directing insults at the legislator during the discussion. The incident subsequently generated debate on social media, where users focused on the language used by the politicians.

Oppong criticised the mockery directed at the MP, suggesting that political disagreements often create opportunities for opponents and their supporters to ridicule public figures, sometimes based on disputed interpretations of their statements.

In a humorous conclusion to her post, she described politics as a difficult undertaking, writing, “Politics deɛ bonsam adwuma paaa ooooo.”

She also made a playful reference to the religious affiliations of those involved, remarking that they had all been in church, accompanied by laughing emojis.
