Chiefs Coach Reveals What Mayo and Ighodaro Must Do Before Becoming Regular Starters

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has explained why Khanyisa Mayo and new striker Etiosa Ighodaro are yet to become regular options in his attacking department, making it clear that both players still have important work to do before they can make a bigger contribution to the team.

Mayo arrived at Naturena with high expectations after making a name for himself as one of the recognised attacking players in South African football. Many Chiefs supporters were looking forward to seeing what he could bring to the team, especially because of his experience and ability in front of goal. However, his involvement has been limited as he continues to work towards regaining full match fitness.

Da Cruz believes the former Cape Town City striker is getting closer to being ready, but the coach does not want to rush him into matches that require a high level of physical strength and intensity. The Frenchman understands that bringing a player back too early could affect his performance and put unnecessary pressure on him.

“Mayo is not far, he’s a quality player but for this game he was not physically ready to play this type of game, he must walk into the game, and with Ighodaro, he needs to understand the game model, so we’ll work with him,” Da Cruz said.

Meanwhile, Ighodaro is another attacking option Chiefs hope to benefit from as the season continues. However, the striker still needs time to understand the coach’s playing style, tactical instructions and what is expected of him when the team is in possession and without the ball.

Da Cruz believes the Nigerian forward can become an important solution for Amakhosi, but he wants him to adapt properly before giving him more responsibility. This could be important as Chiefs look to improve their attacking options and become more competitive against the strongest teams in the league.

The coach also highlighted the physical challenge of facing Orlando Pirates, pointing out how much intensity the Buccaneers bring during the closing stages of matches. He explained that Pirates have quality players on the bench who can change the game when introduced.

“He can be another solution… when we play teams like Pirates, we need to be physically ready, you see the last 20 minutes, they are full of intensity, they introduce fresh players with quality, so we must be ready,” Da Cruz added.

His comments show that Chiefs are aware of the need to improve their squad depth and physical condition. Supporters will be hoping that Mayo returns to full fitness soon and that Ighodaro settles into the team quickly, giving Da Cruz more attacking options as the season progresses.
