TraffiTech-GH: Ghana digital speed enforcement begins

Ghana’s police have switched on TraffiTech-GH, a digital traffic enforcement system that catches speeding with cameras and sends fine notices straight to your phone. It went live today, 1 November 2026.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) runs it. Cameras are mounted in police vehicles and on tripods, and they record vehicles that go over the speed limit.

“We are set, everything is ready, and we are taking off,” said ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the MTTD’s Director of Education, Research and Training.

If a camera catches your vehicle speeding, the MTTD sends a text message to the phone number the vehicle owner registered with the department.

The message carries the sender ID GPS MTTD. Inside is a link where you can watch the video of the alleged offence, including the date, time and location.

You then have 14 days to either pay the fine or contest it in court.

The point of the system is that police no longer need to stop you, impound your car, or take you to a police station or motor court to gather evidence.

Speeding is the first focus. According to the MTTD, cameras will target drivers who exceed:

ACP Obeng said the digital system will run alongside the existing manual approach, though the department plans to scale down roadside arrests for speeding using handheld radar guns. TraffiTech-GH deals only with speeding. Other traffic offences will still be handled the old way.

Commercial transport operators have threatened to suspend services nationwide from 1 November in protest at the system.

ACP Obeng said the MTTD had engaged transport stakeholders and run public education before launch. He added that some operators welcomed the digital approach because it could spare drivers the inconvenience of being arrested and taken to police stations and courts.

Check that the phone number on your vehicle’s registration with the MTTD is correct and active. That is where your notice will land, and you do not want it going to a number you no longer use.

If a text from GPS MTTD arrives, open the link and check the date, time and location against your own movements. If the evidence is wrong, you have 14 days to challenge it in court. If it is right, pay within the window to avoid a bigger problem.

And watch your speed. The cameras are live.
