The incident, which reportedly happened yesterday, 31 October, was captured on a dashboard camera fitted to a bakkie travelling behind the truck.

In the footage, the bakkie is initially seen travelling behind another truck before overtaking it.

Further ahead, a Superlink combination is travelling in the left-hand lane. However, without much warning, the heavy vehicle suddenly moves across to the right-hand lane, apparently attempting to make a U-turn.

The unexpected manoeuvre puts the approaching bakkie directly in the truck’s path.

Fortunately, the bakkie driver reacts quickly, swerving to the left and managing to squeeze past the trailer without making contact.

The quick reaction appears to have prevented what could have been a serious collision, particularly considering the size and weight of the truck combination involved.

Making a U-turn with a heavy vehicle, especially a long Superlink combination, requires careful planning and sufficient space.

While truck drivers sometimes find themselves in difficult situations where they need to turn around at locations that are not specifically designed for heavy vehicles, taking shortcuts or attempting risky manoeuvres can have devastating consequences.

Before attempting a U-turn, drivers should assess the available space, check for approaching traffic in both directions and ensure that the entire combination can complete the manoeuvre without obstructing other road users.

Visibility is another important consideration. A truck may have a clear view of the road ahead, but approaching motorists might not anticipate a sudden change in direction.

Where possible, drivers should rather proceed to a designated turning point, suitable intersection or safe area where the manoeuvre can be completed without putting others at risk.

A few extra kilometres are always better than a serious crash.
