Bayero Agabi sets continental benchmark as IXPN honours him for outstanding contribution to Internet journalism
Dr. Bayero Agabi, Founder of DigiVation Network, has received the Distinguished Contribution to Internet Journalism Award from the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), in recognition of his outstanding and enduring contributions to reporting, documenting and advancing Nigeria’s Internet and digital infrastructure ecosystem.
The award was presented yesterday, during the IXPN Excellence and Legacy Awards, organised as part of activities marking the 20th anniversary of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria, under the theme, “Connecting Nigeria, Powering the Future.” The recognition celebrates Agabi’s contributions to Internet journalism through insightful reporting, informed analysis and storytelling that have helped document developments, challenges, achievements and opportunities within Nigeria’s Internet and digital infrastructure sector.
Through his work, Agabi has consistently highlighted the critical role of Internet infrastructure in driving Nigeria’s digital transformation, drawing attention to issues around Internet connectivity, broadband penetration, data centres, cloud computing, Internet exchange, cybersecurity, digital innovation and the broader digital economy.
The award also underscores the growing importance of specialised technology journalism in building public understanding of the infrastructure, policies, investments and innovations shaping Nigeria’s digital future.
“Receiving the recognition at IXPN’s 20th anniversary celebration is particularly significant, given the organisation’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s Internet ecosystem through local traffic exchange, improved connectivity, reduced dependence on international routing and enhanced Internet performance,” an excited Agabi said.
Established in 2006, IXPN has played a central role in the development of Nigeria’s Internet infrastructure, providing an important platform for Internet service providers, telecommunications operators, content providers and other network stakeholders to exchange local Internet traffic efficiently.
The Distinguished Contribution to Internet Journalism Award further recognises the contribution of journalists and media professionals to documenting this evolution and ensuring that the progress of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure receives the attention it deserves.
For Agabi, the honour represents recognition of the value of consistent, informed and impactful journalism in advancing conversations around Internet development and Nigeria’s digital economy.
The award, presented by the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria, carries the inscription: “In recognition of his outstanding and enduring contribution to Internet journalism through insightful reporting, informed analysis, and storytelling that has documented and advanced Nigeria’s Internet and digital infrastructure ecosystem.”
The recognition adds to the growing acknowledgement of the role of technology journalism in promoting digital awareness, encouraging investment, strengthening stakeholder engagement and supporting the development of a more connected and digitally empowered Nigeria.
