WHAT A NIGHT FOR MATULUDI: Sundowns Score FOUR Against Durban City And Return To The Summit

Matuludi Fires Sundowns Back To The Summit As Masandawana Deliver A Stunning Response

Mamelodi Sundowns have reclaimed their position at the top of the Betway Premiership standings following an impressive 4-1 victory over Durban City on Saturday evening, with Thabang Matuludi producing a memorable performance to inspire the Brazilians.

The Tshwane giants entered the encounter knowing that victory was important after Orlando Pirates had temporarily moved above them following their 2-1 Soweto Derby triumph over Kaizer Chiefs earlier in the day. Sundowns responded in convincing fashion, demonstrating their attacking quality and determination to remain firmly involved in the title race.

Matuludi emerged as the standout performer, scoring twice to register his first brace since joining Sundowns from Polokwane City. The defender opened the scoring in the 34th minute, rising above the Durban City defence to head home following a well-delivered corner.

His contribution proved crucial as Sundowns looked to establish control over the contest. Although Durban City attempted to remain competitive, they struggled to contain the hosts’ attacking movements and create consistent opportunities in front of goal.

The former Polokwane City defender struck again in the 66th minute, meeting Aubrey Modiba’s delivery with another well-directed header to double Sundowns’ advantage. His second goal gave the Brazilians greater breathing room and placed them in a commanding position.

Miguel Cardoso’s side continued pushing forward, refusing to take their foot off the accelerator. Their attacking pressure eventually produced a third goal in the 79th minute when Iqraam Rayners found the back of the net after being set up by Siyanda Ndlovu.

Durban City managed to find a response in the 86th minute through Jean Lwamba, who converted from close range to give the visitors a consolation goal. However, their hopes of making a late comeback were quickly ended.

Substitute Antonio van Wyk completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, finishing a rapid attacking move after receiving a pass from Arthur Sales to make it 4-1.

The result was particularly important for Sundowns’ title ambitions, as they moved to 26 points from 10 matches, one point ahead of Orlando Pirates, who have collected 25 points from nine games. Pirates, however, still have a match in hand, meaning the competition at the top remains intense.

For Sundowns, the victory represents a timely response to the pressure created by their closest title challengers. Matuludi’s outstanding contribution will also provide Cardoso with another positive attacking option as the campaign continues.

With the Betway Premiership race beginning to take shape, Sundowns have once again reminded their rivals that surrendering the top position will not come easily. Their next challenge will be maintaining this momentum while balancing their domestic ambitions with upcoming continental commitments.
