Uhuru-Rigathi Reconciliation Talks Collapse as Sunday Nation Reveals Fresh Details on Failed Meeting
The highly anticipated political reconciliation meeting between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has collapsed after Kenyatta reportedly became unavailable.
According to a report by the Sunday Nation, the meeting which was tentatively scheduled for last Tuesday failed to materialize, dealing a blow to efforts aimed at uniting the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The initiative is being driven by Mt. Kenya elders and regional leaders who are seeking to forge a cohesive political front in the vote-rich region. Notably, this marks the fourth attempt to reconcile the two leaders since 2022.
A key new development in the mediation efforts is the introduction of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki into the dynamic. Reports indicate that Kindiki has entered the dialogue and has reached out to influential political veterans such as former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi to help persuade Kenyatta to come to the negotiating table.
The involvement of Kindiki is seen as an attempt to address the current leadership vacuum in the Mt. Kenya region, which has remained politically fragmented since the fallout between Uhuru and Gachagua.
According to sources from Kenyatta’s camp, the former Head of State was unavailable or had travelled out of the country when the meeting was expected to take place. Gachagua later clarified that no specific formal date had been set for the talks, appearing to downplay the failed meeting.
Insiders close to Kenyatta indicate that he remains reluctant to mend fences with Gachagua. His allies have cited fundamental differences in political philosophy and fear that an alliance with the former Deputy President could damage Kenyatta’s nationwide political standing.
Kenyatta has largely kept a low political profile since leaving office, although his influence in Mt. Kenya politics remains significant through the Jubilee Party.
On the other hand, Gachagua’s strategy following his impeachment in 2024 has been to consolidate his support base through his new political vehicle, the DCP. His team views a truce with Uhuru as essential to consolidating the fragmented Mt. Kenya vote and boosting his profile within the broader opposition coalition.
The reconciliation efforts are further complicated by conflicting 2027 endorsements. Uhuru’s faction is largely aligned with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i through the Jubilee Party, while Gachagua has publicly backed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, even as opposition coalition talks continue to evolve.
